BANJO PATERSON ON HENRY PARKES

In his book, Old Books, Old Friends, Old Sydney: The Fascinating Reminiscences of a Sydney Bookseller, James R. Tyrrell writes:

Banjo Paterson, who practised as a solicitor at least sufficiently to have had legal dealings with Sir Henry Parkes, Sir John Robertson, and others who had what Banjo in his racy phrase called 'rough rides over the financial rocks', wrote of Sir Henry:

The old man never had any money, though goodness knows he had opportunities enough of getting it 'on the side' had he been so minded. On various occasions he came into the lawyer's offices where I was employed, always full of dignity, in a frock coat and tall hat, to discuss his pecuniary complications. But personal finance bored him. He despised money: he was Sir Henry Parkes.
